The criticality of trust is even clearer today as generative AI is changing the landscape of what's possible with AI. For example, generative AI models can produce highly believable, well-structured responses so it can be hard to identify an incorrect response without the right subject matter expertise. Generative AI does not have test-retest reliability, meaning you can ask the same question many times to an LLM and get different answers each time. Many business leaders are feeling pressure from investors, clients, employees, and others to accelerate their adoption of AI, including generative AI, but they're weighing the urgency to act against the potential risks. AI governance is how you define policies and establish accountability throughout the AI lifecycle.

By Kate Woolley, IBMBy now most of us have played around with generative AI, amusing ourselves with witty pet poems or challenging AI to perform tasks like spelling "lollipop" backward. But while these fun use cases of AI are deservedly having a moment, what should really be celebrated is the transformative power of generative AI for business. Partners should double down on building AI skills and capabilities so they can collaborate and scale AI adoption across industries. With the right technology and skills, business partners will be able to co-create with their clients today and help them envision what they can build tomorrow. We all want to succeed, and only together can we take full advantage of the opportunities that generative AI presents.

But success in applying AI, whether based on the most advanced machine learning (ML) or the latest generative AI leveraging foundation models, is not just measured in speed. Whether based on ML or foundation models, the more customized your AI models are to those priorities, the better you will be able to serve your customers and deliver real business value. A hybrid cloud architecture provides the data foundation for extending AI deep into the business. If the models contain bias, or if AI models are misleading, "hallucinate," or are not explainable, the risk and cost of reputational damage and regulatory fines could be high. Three opportunities to put AI into actionHere are the best opportunities to derive benefit from AI in your business today:1.

When it comes to cybersecurity attacks, phishing continues to be effective for hackers and costly for organizations. The 2022 IBM X-Force Threat Intelligence Index research showed that phishing is the way attackers are getting into organizations 41% of the time. "I cannot emphasize enough how important it is for organizations to not only develop an incident response plan, but to test it regularly." According to the Cost of a Data Breach Report 2022, organizations with an incident response team that tested their incident response plan (versus those who did not) saved on average $2.66M in data breach costs. Aiding companies in this transformation are data analytics, artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies—all of which can help businesses build the intelligent, predictive, resilient and sustainable supply chains they need. "Organizations are realizing how vulnerable they are to supply chain issues," said Jonathan Wright, global managing partner, finance & supply chain transformation, at IBM. Because having efficient supply chains can be critical to today's digital businesses, companies should have greater end-to-end, real-time visibility of their supply chains, Wright says. By implementing a few key strategic initiatives, organizations can get the most value from these tools to enhance their supply chains. *Building intelligent, resilient and sustainable supply chains, 14, June 2022.
Meeting researchers' demanding data storage requirementsEinstein partners with IBM to help meet the NIH standards and manage these huge data sets. "A leading-edge infrastructure helps us attract top research talent," said Shailesh Shenov, assistant dean for Einstein Information Technology. IBM Spectrum Scale software features an auto-tiering feature that moves less frequently used data to IBM Tape, which only powers up when it is accessed. Furthermore, the tiering contributes to our sustainability initiatives because tape storage only consumes power during reads or writes." Because it deals with highly regulated healthcare data, Einstein added IBM Data Guardium Protection to automate compliance auditing and reporting and monitor user activity.
But this rapid development also brings risk: Future quantum computers could crack the encryption schemes that safeguard valuable data, like health records and financial data. One immediate concern: 'Harvest-now, hack-later' attacks — where sensitive encrypted data is stolen today for decryption using future quantum computers. The good news is that quantum-safe cryptography, capable of protecting this information, exists today. So, modern encryption methods often use large numbers as codes, such that their prime factors form a key. But they should also understand the risk of future fault-tolerant quantum computers, and explore quantum-safe cryptography to protect their data and systems.
But circular economy models can provide smart examples and accessible starting points for how we can work toward avoiding a trashy future, so to speak. For an example of a perfect circular economy, look to nature. Waste management companies, in particular, have an opportunity to minimize landfill waste using artificial intelligence and automation technologies. Evaluating the potential of AI for waste sortingHera personnel analyze waste manually. "The experience with IBM Garage has allowed us to activate a particularly innovative solution in the field of waste collection, selection, and recovery," Zappoli said.
Experiential programs like hackathons and accessible technologies like virtual reality are creating more opportunities to deliver richer learning to more students. One example of new teaching technologies is in IBM's work with Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). We are collaborating with 20 HBCUs to bring new technical training opportunities to students and co-create cybersecurity training centers. From early pilots of virtual reality teaching, to innovation challenges, students are benefitting from access to cutting-edge technologies and multi-disciplinary collaboration. In 2023, we're excited to explore new experiential learning technologies and help tackle the skills shortage.
To take advantage of the disparate data sets created within supply chain workflows, you first need to focus in on that key business objective for a supply chain organization: delivering better quality products more efficiently at scale. A data fabric can simplify data access in an organization to facilitate self-service data consumption, while remaining agnostic to data environments, processes, utility, and geography. A data fabric automates data discovery, governance, and consumption, enabling enterprises to use data to maximize their value chain by providing the right data at the right time, regardless of where it resides. Additionally, you can generate golden records that ensure product data consistency across the various data sources and enable a smoother experience when integrating data assets for analysis within a data fabric architecture. Ultimately, the data fabric architecture can help significantly reduce time-to-insights by unifying fragmented data on a singular platform in a governed manner in any industry, not just the retail or supply chain space.
